Senna

I finally got around to watching the long awaited (and multiple award winning) documentary, Senna.  The documentary follows the racing career of the great Formula One driver, Ayrton Senna.  From his start in Kart (Cart) racing to his debut in Formula One.  This leads to his first Championship in 1988 through to his death during the Grand Prix of  San Marino, Italy (Imola).   Although the setting is Formula One, even if you’re not a fan, you should watch it because this is the story about a person striving to be the best in his field; including the tribulations he...

— Porsche 959 — Technical Perfection; Before It Was Cool

January 2, 2012
Porsche 959 a

In what was considered to be the most technically advanced production car at the time (and is still high-tech by today’s standard), Porsche created the 959.  The 959 was in production from 1986 to 1989.  It was designed largely as a Rally car.  Just like Lancia’s Stratos,  it was sold in order to make the 959 legal on the rally circuit.  Porsche was required to produce and sell at least 200 cars on the open, auto market for the 959 to be considered “production” by the World Rally sanctioning body (FIA) . Porsche utilized one of its existing engines,...

— Aerotrain — General Motors And Its Train

December 31, 2011
Aerotrain5

In the pantheon of carriages, trains are efficient at carrying lots of passenger between cities.  Trains can reliably stop at numerous locations along a railroad and “work” 24 hours a day.  Although much of the American train industry is dying (or dead), trains are a prime means of moving millions of people per day throughout the world.  As far as looks are concerned there are several trains that stand out from the rest.  Obviously the Bullet trains (generically) from Japan, Europe, and China are amazing, but back in the 50′s there was another.  The GM Aerotrain. Back in the...

— Ford Mustang Boss 302 — This Will Be A Painful Review

December 28, 2011
Boss 302 e

The ‘Boss is back.  The last generation of the Boss 302 hit the roads way back in 1970.  Everyone loved it and it was a commercial success.  It could only hide for so long.  The Boss Mustang was revived for 2011/2012 model year.  When Boss Mustangs are compared to thier non-Boss Mustangs of the same model year, the ‘Boss’ have more powerful engines, more stout suspensions, obnoxious decals, and other minor modifications.  Back in the 60′s, Boss’ were brutally fast compared to the cars it shared the roads with.  It was a musclecar then and didn’t have to compete...

— Rolls Royce Apparition Concept — What What?? — Do You Get It?!?!

December 23, 2011
Apparition

Concept Cars are supposed to be wild and “out there”, but some concept cars look like they CAN be produced in in the future; while other just don’t look reasonable!  The best concept cars; like the Cadillac Ciel, can be imagined in our garages (or at least on the street in front of our apartment buildings) while other, like the Apparition… can not (and will not fit in our garages anyway).   The Apparition concept was drawn up by designer, Jeremy Westerlund.  What do you think? — Car And Carriage

— 2012 Jeep Cherokee — Timeless Class

December 20, 2011
2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee is an institution.  It comes from a long line of tough trucks to include what (some say) is the very first “utility” Vehicle, the WW2 military Jeep.  Once it was sold to civilians, that “sport-utility” military Jeep led to other premiere SUVs such as the 1947 Land Rover over in Great Britain (the first of which used the Jeep chassis).  Jeep trucks evolved into vehicles such as the 6 passenger Wagoneer.  The Cherokee is a direct descendent of all Jeep vehicles before it, and the Grand Cherokee is the king of them all. There 2012 Jeep...

— The 2012 Ranger — The Ford Ranger Is Back

December 13, 2011
2012 Ford Ranger 2

The Ranger is coming back in 2012.  The compact truck has been resurrected with the goal of leading the world in sales for its size and type.  Where the full-size truck market has been all but cornered by Ford, the compact truck market has been controlled by Asian car companies, specifically, Toyota’s compact truck line.  Ford hopes to take a bite out of the compact market, especially since the compact truck market is much larger (in the global context) than the full-sized, U.S. market. The new Ranger is intended to be built for all markets as a sort of...

Hellcat-1

Now, the most dangerous carriage known to man are motorcycles, or perhaps, dragons, but if you’ve been to Car And Carriage before, you know that Confederate Motorcycles is our favorite cycle company.  We consider the Wraith the most amazing piece of two wheeled machinery EVER devised.  And Confederate has done it again with a new bike; and that bike is the X132 Hellcat. — Caterpillar 797 — Big-Assed Earth Mover

December 4, 2011
Caterpillar 797

One of the largest working Carriages, one person can drive are the large Earth Movers.  They look ominous as well as utilitarian.  One of the largest and most common Earth Movers is the Caterpillar 797 series.  Today they are the largest “mechanical” Earth Movers you can buy.  Their engines send power to transmissions, through differentials, and out to the wheels.  There are larger Earth Movers, but they are hybrid electric. Each tire weighs 11,680 lbs.,  and to replace one of the tires you will be set back $60,000 per tire, and the 797 uses 6 of them.  Note the...
